A stroke can change your life forever. Many people are left permanently disabled after a stroke. Fortunately, there are ways that you can improve your health and reduce your chances of being permanently disabled.
Light to moderate exercise can speed up the healing process. Walking is a simple exercise that you can do. It can help improve your mobility and balance. If you are unable to walk, then you can do leg and arm lifts. You may also want to work with a physical therapist.
Take Medication and Meet With a Doctor
Your locum tenens stroke doctor will likely prescribe you medication that will help you recover. It is important for you to take this medication as prescribed. If you have adverse side effects, then you will need to let your doctor know. They may need to change your dosage or switch you to another medication. Meeting with your doctor regularly is an incredibly important part of the process as well. Your doctor will help develop a plan for you to encourage your recovery.
Follow a Healthy Diet
You can boost your recovery with good nutrition. Experts recommend following a Mediterranean diet. This diet is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, olive oil and omega 3 fatty acids. You can get omega 3 fatty acids are found in salmon, mackerel and trout. Red meat is something that should be eaten infrequently while following a Mediterranean diet. Processed foods and sugar should be avoided as much as possible. Wine can be included as a part of the Mediterranean because it has heart-healthy plant compounds in it. However, if you don’t drink alcohol, then you can have grape juice.
Engage Your Brain
A stroke doesn’t just affect you physically. It can also affect you mentally. That is why it is important for you to keep your brain engaged. You can play board games, card games and do crossword puzzles to engage your brain. Staying mentally active is incredibly important at an advanced age in general but especially after a stroke. Finding some way to engage your brain every day can be instrumental to your recovery.
Get the Proper Amount of Sleep
Sleep helps your brain recover. That is why it is important for you to make sure that you get seven to nine hours of sleep every night. If you find yourself having trouble sleeping, then meditating or doing another relaxing activity before bed can help you.
Stroke recovery can be a difficult process. However, you can make this process easier by exercising, eating right and taking the medication that your doctor prescribes. It is also important for you to engage your brain. Furthermore, you will need to get the proper amount of sleep every night.
