It is owned by the Captain John Bertram Estate and managed by the Bertram House Board of Trustees and Sunrise Senior Living. The John Bertram House of Salem is part of the John Bertram Homes, founded by Salem sea captain and philanthropist John Bertram. The community opened in 1990, as the first free-standing assisted living community in Massachusetts. Its sister home is the Bertram House of Swampscott.
